Boy Punch

My friend – and former drama club student – B is having a baby in May, and Em and I went to her baby shower today. She is so sweet; I just love her. I’m so excited for her and her husband, and I know they will be great parents. They got a lot of great things for their baby boy. I know I love having a boy, and I hope they do, too! It’s especially sweet because B’s husband’s father died soon after they found out they were pregnant, and the baby will be named after him.

The punch was even blue, because they are having a boy! Blue punch is such a cute idea. :)

Em and B came over to my house later, where we hung out and talked while our husbands watched the Final Four tournament at Em and Nate’s. It felt nice to do something “girly” like sit and talk while they ate pizza and watched basketball.

Old and New Friends

We met up with some college friends tonight…they live in the area, but for some reason it’s been several years since we’ve seen them! But we finally made it happen this evening. They have two girls who are older than J and a little boy who is six or so months older than C. (He’s almost the same age as my niece K.) J and their younger daughter got along swimmingly; I found a note in my diaper bag when we got home that said, “Hi J, Love Skye. I love you <3 <3 <3″

This picture cracks me up because there is so much going on…JJ is putting on a Cars backpack, Nate appears to be falling asleep, K is looking at me like, “oh my goodness!!!,” and my friends’ little boy is sitting on C. If only one of the dogs was in the picture, it would be perfect. :D

Photo Booth

My friend M and her two kids came over today. Usually we’d have our moms group, but we had to cancel it due to scheduling conflicts. So in lieu of that, we got together anyway!

The first thing her son T wanted to do was play with PhotoBooth on our iMac.

I have to admit, I don’t always get the appeal of making silly faces in PhotoBooth, but it seems to be the Thing To Do. So here we are. ;) I thought these would be cute for my Photo of the Day.

(Dear Future JJ, I’m sorry that your hair looks so crazy. It can’t really decide whether it wants to be straight or curly, so it tends to just end up looking crazy. Especially on days like this, when we aren’t going anywhere and you don’t want me to brush it. So I’m sorry!)

Play Day

After my moms’ group today, some of our friends came over for a playdate. We ate peanut butter and jelly, drew pictures, and watched the babies crawl around and look at each other. These two little boys are only 6 weeks apart, I think. It’s really fun to see them experiencing each other and the idea of them being friends!

I also showed two of the kids how to use my camera. They actually took a couple of decent pictures! I was impressed for a couple of (almost, in JJ’s case) three year-olds.

(C’s hair is looking kind of poofy and is starting to hang over his ears. Hmm. Maybe he needs a haircut.)

Five Years Ago

5 years ago on this day, a family was changed forever. A precious little girl was born still, with no first cry or breath that parents take for granted. She was a beloved sister and anticipated daughter, a child who would have been cherished and loved every day of her life. But it wasn’t meant to be. She never took a breath on this earth, and five years later, there is still an empty spot in the hearts of her family and friends where she should have been.

I always think of the color purple when I think of her. I don’t know why. I don’t know if she would have liked purple or not, but there is a part of me that thinks she would. So after I finished making a gift for her parents tonight, I wrapped it in purple wrapping paper. I like to pretend that it would have made her smile.

We miss you, Catti, and we wish you were here. I wish you and J were best friends. Maybe you would be athletic like she is, and you could run around together and laugh like crazy. I wish you were here to see just how much your sister M loves you and misses you. You would be amazed at how kind and generous she is, and I know you and she would have a bond like no other. I wish you were here to see how much your parents have changed in the past few years. You would be so proud of them. They have done things that so many people only dream about. They have conquered fears, faced demons, and come out on the other side. They have turned their mourning into hoopdancing. I hope you can look down from heaven and smile at the life you could have had. And I hope that someday, we’ll join you in worshiping our Creator. Until then, we celebrate your short life and praise the One who created you. I’m so glad to be at least a small part in your life and your legacy.

Ornamental

We finally took down our Christmas tree tonight. Did I mention that we meant to do it a week ago? Yeah, well. Tom and I spent the whole week saying, “We should really take down that Christmas tree” to each other every night, and then we’d put on an episode of the West Wing and forget all about it. But after the Broncos beat the Steelers this evening and the kids were all snug in bed, we put all the ornaments away, carried the tree outside, and spent the next two hours cleaning up needles.

I love putting the ornaments on my tree – and taking them off, for that matter – because there are so many memories tied up in them. Tom and I like to buy ornaments from places we visit on vacation. His mom always gives everybody ornaments for Christmas gifts. My grandma gave us a box of angel ornaments the Christmas before she passed away. Those ornaments aren’t exactly my style, but I love that they remind me of her. Just the way I love this mitten, because my sister and her best friend Mel picked it out for me.

Mel is in heaven with Jesus now, so seeing this mitten on my tree every Christmas floods my heart with memories. It always makes me smile, thinking of Em and Mel finding that mitten and buying it for me together, because Mel thought it was the cutest ornament ever. And I like to remember her smile, her laughter, the way she made just about anything fun. How much joy she found in life. How much joy she found in that little mitten.

Maybe one of the reasons I’ve been putting off taking down the Christmas tree is because I didn’t want to pack all those memories back into the box. Or maybe I’m just lazy…

Pic(nic) a little, talk a little

It seemed like a good day for a picnic, so after church we grabbed subs and met some friends at a nearby park. (Ok, THEY grabbed the subs and we met them there. How nice of them.)

July 10

The kids played on some blankets, at the playground, and just your general running around that kids do. J found one of K’s books and “read” it to her, ie made up a story that went along with all the pictures.

July 10

J, JJ, and T ran and played in the dirt and by a few big trees. The best part for them was when a squirrel ran up the tree and they watched it watching them.

July 10

K tried desperately to steal C’s pacifier, although her mommy made sure that didn’t happen. I guess all pacifiers look alike when you’re 8 months old. ;)

July 10

It was nice to spend time with friends on a HOT Sunday afternoon. I was feeling a little bummed that it was my due date and I wasn’t in labor, but what can you do? Nothing, really…

Game On!

I feel like I’m trying to make every minute count before I have a baby. I keep thinking, “I need to do ______ while I still can!” Obviously, my life isn’t ending when I have a baby. But it will change. Some of that will be temporary; the newborn stage is much different than the toddler stage. So tonight my sister and her husband came over to hang out. Their baby is almost 8 months old, and she and my girls slept upstairs in the bedrooms while we played games.

July 9

We played Ticket to Ride and started a game of pinochle before N realized that they needed to get up early and should go home. I really thought I had a shot to win at Ticket to Ride…one of the things that bugs me about the game is that you never really know if you’re doing well or not until the end. But it was fun anyway! :)

Tom won by a relatively large margin. He usually does. He’s pretty intense when he plays games…

July 9

I really enjoy playing games. I wish I got to do it more often. We used to play games with friends a LOT, and then somehow things have changed since then. Maybe I don’t have the same friends anymore, or maybe we’re just busier, or maybe people don’t enjoy games as much as I do. I don’t know. Or maybe I just need to invite people over to play more often…

Girls’ Weekend

Some girl friends and I decided it would be fun to have a girls’ night/weekend, so we got together last night for dinner. We picked a nice restaurant that most of us hadn’t been to, and it was fun! The chicken I ordered was really good. ;) Then some of us went back to one girl’s house and spent the night. We meant to watch a movie but ended up talking half the night while eating (edible) cookie dough instead. Today after a relaxed morning, we grabbed lunch at Moe’s and brought it to Color Me Mine, a paint-your-own-pottery place nearby that we like to frequent.

June 18

I decided to make a football bank for the baby’s room. (I made a piggy bank for J’s room and want to make a matching one for JJ’s room, but they didn’t have any of the same piggies this time. So I think I’ll have to wait until they come back in stock, or get something else.)

My bank when I was done…before firing. I thought about painting the baby’s name on the stand part, but since we haven’t quite decided on a name yet (and my friends were all there), I decided to leave it nameless. Not particularly creative, but I think it’ll look really cute in his room.

June 18

Painting (with all our Moe’s cups)

June 18

H finally finished the piggy bank that she’s been making for her son!

June 18

A used a bunch of different techniques to paint a super cool box to put her hair accessories in.

June 18

R stayed after we all left so she could finish the plate she was making as a gift for someone.

June 18

It was a really fun way to spend a weekend. :) It was nice to sleep in and be able to chat and take a shower without any little people yelling for me. ;) Just really nice and relaxing to hang out with friends and talk, and not feel like we had to DO anything. Plus I think it’s good for me to take advantage of the time when I can still go away for a night without my kiddos, since I won’t be able to do that in a few weeks…

A Super Bowl

For the Super Bowl this year, I made some football-themed cupcakes.

Feb 6

We only had one Steeler fan among us, and it was somewhat forced upon her.

Feb 6

Most of the rest of us were rooting for the Packers.

Feb 6

I think we were pretty excited when they won. ;) It was a great game, too. Well played and hard fought ’til the end. Just the way a Super Bowl should be.
